The End is Approaching...

It seems to be that time in the semester when stress starts affecting me, and my progress. I'm not sure if I work well under pressure or not. I don't think I have ever received any feedback about it either way. I just know that I end up getting less sleep and my body's reaction isn't the best. I am a little concerned about this, considering I don't know what path my Professional Writing and Editing concentration will take me down. It could be that I deal with this type of pressure and stress everyday in my career, I don't know.

Anyway, I feel like I'm not necessarily behind in my work right now, but I'm sitting on that fence. I have started a few drafts of the letters I plan to send to congressman, but I was really hoping to get them sent before this legislation session ended. Unfortunately, I don't feel as if I will have time to committ to that goal. Plus, I'm pretty sure the bills I researched and drafted the letters about were already voted on. I'm not sure. It is frustrating, thinking that I could have had a part in those decisions, had I been a little more on top of my game. So I figure there will be more research and drafting in my near future. Add to that the projects for this class and the end of the semester assignments for the rest of my classes and you have the typical stressed out college student. I'm pretty sure most of you can identify with this situation.

Well, I will continue to work on my time management skills and try to accomplish the rest of the goals I have for this semester. Good Luck!

  1. I definately agree.. when it gets close to the end it is the hardest to stay focused and especially with the nice weather right around the corner. My best advice is to not let yourself get distracted by staying at the library with a cup of coffee.. at least this always helps me lol. Just tell yourself we are almost there and try to keep on top of things, but I know I tend to wait until the last minute too which can set you back. As long as you are not behind now you are doin good, but sitting on the fence is a scary position because you could go eitherway. Try to use classtime to get alot done too. Good luck with everything and I know how you feel!

  2. I, too, agree. But think of it this way. The faster you finish actual "things," the closer you are. In saying this I, of course, am being one of those hypocrites you're always hearing about. Still, I think it is good advice. Also, the faster you finish individual projects, the more time you have to do other important things--e.g., porch-sit.

  3. You raise some very important issues here related to the ancient rhetorical concept of "kairos," that is, the timeliness and relevance and appropriateness of a particular topic for discussion. This concept is extremely important to consider when writing on legislative topics and/or to legislators. And you're right, too, that it can be difficult for "outsiders"/ordinary citizens to track the progress and debate on a specific piece of legislation. What strategies have you employed to learn about the specific status of the legislation you're writing about? What might be some limitations to this search strategy in terms of knowing exactly where it stands right now in the legislature? What might be some other sources to use?

  4. First, thank you for your kind words about my blog posts. I'm not sure what quirky means, other than that Quark is a design program, but thanks. Anyways, it might be a good think you didn't write to congressmen during the Legislative session, and I'll tell you why. These are some busy, busy people. They barely have time to eat, let alone pay attention to students. I've had to try to get ahold of these people multiple times in and out of session for news articles and I have to say it's simply exhausting. Perhaps now that they're out of session they'll have more time to devote to paying attention to your letters. If you actually talk to one of these people and they're rude, excuse it. They tend to be cranky when they're not bossing people around.

    Hope this is helpful,
